Thorough training
When Matthew Wiseman first looked into the Smart repair franchise system he was skeptical of the systems, the training and also the turnover and profit, especially as his previous trade was as a commercial painter on coaches.
His previous knowledge of solvent paint spraying led him to question the ability of using waterbased systems outside in “the real world” and not in the confines of a controlled spray booth.
“I found the training to be very comprehensive and detailed in all aspects of running a SMART repair business, and not just the technical aspects. I had a little trouble believing the high standard of repair that can be achieved by SMART repair coming from a conventional body shop environment, where a bumper scuff etc means full repaint of the panel at high time and cash cost. Suffice to say I now fully understand that this is an inappropriate and unnecessary expense and inconvenience to the customer, since having been trained by painttechnics I can and do turn out repairs of equal quality at a fraction of bodyshop cost.”
In the months that have followed Matthew is happy in the knowledge that his new skill is very much in demand, and is now over two weeks booked up with work. His skills are enabling him to tackle larger panel work, whilst still following the guidelines of SMART repair.
“I found Paint Technics refreshing and were very upfront with what can be achieved. They explained that success is dependant on how hard you work and how much effort you put into your business, but that you can build a business that will make you a very good income. And that is my experience, certainly a considerable amount more than you will achieve by working for someone else, and for the most part it is also a really enjoyable way to earn a living, with excellent technical support on the end of a phone.”
Commenting on the training and launch Matthew said:
I have never had to launch and market a business before and was not very sure of my ability to do so. However during the course the training staff continually returned to this subject, and covered all aspects of promoting and advertising. We were always asked to participate in the estimating and costing of repairs, going in to the details of time, complexity, and costings of materials to complete any given repair, and just as importantly how to deal with the public in the manner that will make them want to do business with you and give them the confidence in your ability to carry out a good repair.
To that end Matthew is working hard to fund his next project, the move into a small unit to help with the weather over the inclement winter months, and to give him the scope to tackle more repairs per day.
